Chums at Mexicali Blues

2933 Wilson Boulevard - Arlington, VA - (703) 812-9352

Cuisine: Latin American
Price: Moderate (We spent less than $20 apiece for food and beers)
Date Visited: July 15, 1999

RANDY:
The most perplexing thing about Mexicali Blues is that it seems like it should be a lot better. It is in a great location, is decorated colorfully (some may even call it cute), and the service is attentive and friendly for the most part. Bottom line: The food is just not very tasty. I found my cheese enchiladas to be rather bland. Eating them was more a chore than an adventure. Perhaps this restaurant should be renamed: "Mexicali spews."

SANDRA:
I'll be honest, everytime I go to Mexicali Blues, I really really want to like it. And in fact, I even tell people I do. But you know, I don't think I do like it. First, too many people are crammed in that small space, and it's incredibly loud. My neighbor and I had to shout to be heard across the table. Add that to too few meat alternatives and you get one hungry, crabby person! The few dishes I've been able to eat there (again, not enough meat alternatives) have been quite good, and often quite unusual, but the combination of factors doesn't make it the most appealing place to eat.

CHRISTIAN:
This place really seems to have come a long way since it opened a few months ago. The last time we went the service was inefficient and the food was lackluster. It was so bad, in fact, that many Chums were reluctant to go back a second time. Personally, I'm glad we did. This time around the service was good and my food was excellent. I had a pork papusa and chicken tacos. Both provided a nice variation on the culinary themes one usually associates with Mexican/Latin American cuisine. If I'm not mistaken, the chips were big enough to satisfy even Peter. (Ladies take note: rumor has it that the painted glass door of the men's restroom is somewhat translucent, so you may want to ask for a table with a "view").

Also in attendance were Sara, Peter, Clare, Mary, Emily, Julie, Steve, and Chris.
