Chums at Cajun Bangkok

907 King Street, Alexandria, VA - (703) 836-0038

Cuisine: Thai Cajun
Price: Moderate Plus (We spent about $22 apiece for appetizers and entrees)
Date Visited: March 17, 2001

LONA:
I had been wanting to try Cajun Bangkok for a long time, mainly to find out how the fusion of these two foods would taste. What I discovered was somewhat discouraging: it's really a Thai restaurant that has one or two "blackened" fish dishes and some Thai-seasoned crawfish. The novelty of the name lures in the curious, and keeps the establishment (just barely) from being merely another Thai restaurant in Northern Virginia. In spite of that setback, my food was fairly tasty. We had a cool appetizer that involves wrapping various bits of food into collard green leaf wrappers. (note: uncooked collard greens.) I figure the owners of this restaurant deserve some recognition for their entrepreneurial spirit, both in the spice sales and in the creative naming of their establishment.

CHRISTIAN:
There's at least one good reason to go to Cajun Bangkok instead of any other Thai place in the D.C. area: meang kham. It's the most unusual appetizer I've ever had and I've never seen it at any other Thai restaurant that I've been to. No description can possibly do it justice except to say that it is unusual and wonderful and you must try it. And don't waste your time trying to read the description in the menu - just order it. Another good reason to go to this place is the fact that the menu includes a hefty smattering of Cajun cuisine, a plus if, like me, you have friends (fortunately not Lona and Steve) who are reluctant to try new things. For your less adventurous friends, something like Cajun pecan crusted fish might be just the ticket. In addition to the meang kham, I also had French fried tofu and green curry chicken (my entree). Both were tasty, though I had to request additional fish sauce for the chicken to make it a bit saltier. Basically, if you love spicy food and you happen to be Olde Towne Alexandria, this place is a really good bet.

Also in attendance was Steve.
